About Ghatshila

Ghatshila lies in the East Singhbhum District in the Jharkhand State. The city on the banks of Subarnarekha is surrounded by forest which adds to the beauty of this city of Jharkhand. The city was earlier the headquarters of Dhalbhum Kingdom. Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay, the renowned Bengali writer who wrote “Pather Panchali” was an inhabitant of Ghatshila.

History of Ghatshila

The Dhalbhum Kingdom’s royal family, originally belonged to North-West (Mandu and Dhara) situated at Rajasthan’s border. In order to establish themselves they defeated the Western division of Bengal (this region is popular as the “Jungle Mahals”). These royal families acclaimed their successors with a title of honor. As a result, the elder son of the Raja was entitled “Jubraj”, the next successor as “Hikkim”, the 3rd as “Barathakur”, the 4th as “Kuar”, the 5th as “Musib” and the remaining were entitled “Babu”. Dhalbhum Kingdom occupied an area of about 3100 square km or 1200 sq. mile.

Jamshedpur which is a well-known industrial town is located merely 45 kms away from Ghatshila. The area also houses a community development block known as “Ghatshila”, the headquarters of which lies at Ghatshila. This block was set up in the year 1962 on 4th May. The natural splendor of Ghatshila attracts a huge influx of visitors every year. Among the visitors, a majority of crowd belongs to Bengalis from West Bengal and other states of India. Ghatshila is also famous for the therapeutic values of its sweet water. This water also contains natural minerals and one glass of water is sufficient to satiate your starving stomach.

Ghatshila has by and large a dry climate. The summers witness a minimum temperature of 26 degree Celsius and a maximum temperature of 40 degree Celsius. In the winter months i.e. between the months of November and March the temperature remains between 12 and 20 degree Celsius. June to August is the monsoon time with a maximum average rainfall of 337.7 mm.

According to the census of 2001, the population of Ghatshila was 37850. Female populace comprises 47 percent and male populace comprises 53 percent of the total population. The avg. literacy rate of Ghatshila is 73 percent which is much greater as compared to the national avg. i.e. 59.5 percent. The female literacy is 65 percent, whereas the male literacy is 79 percent. Almost eleven percent of the total populace belongs to the age group which is below 6 years.

The HCL or Hindustan Copper Ltd. which is situated at the Moubhandar, provides source of livelihood to the locals of Ghatshila, Musabani, Moubhandar and the other villages located in the vicinity. Ghatshila is mainly popular because of the HCL mines as they are world’s 2nd deepest mines and the 1st copper mines in Asia.
